Microsoft to give away free antivirus

Microsoft is poised to start giving away security software. The company is reportedly trialling free anti-virus software internally and said the beta version would be released “soon”.

Called Morro, the software will tackle viruses but lack the broader range of utilities, such as parental locks, found in paid-for security suites. Morro will be Microsoft’s second venture in the highly competitive security market. Microsoft’s first attempt revolved around the Windows Live OneCare service that did not succeed in turning many customers away from rivals such as Symantec and McAfee.

Microsoft plans to discontinue Live OneCare once the Morro software is ready.

No specific date has been given for when Morro will be released, but in the past Microsoft has said it would be out by the end of 2009 at the latest.

Microsoft said Morro would tackle viruses, spyware, rootkits and trojans.

Janice Chaffin, Symantec’s president of consumer products, said customers wanted more than just basic protection.

“A full internet security suite is what consumers require today to stay fully protected,” she said.

Security software for home PCs typically cost around £30-40 and often allow users to install protections on more than one computer.

Other companies, such as AVG and Alwil already produce and distribute free anti-virus products.

Fake help

In its latest update, Microsoft added code that detects and deletes the widespread Internet Antivirus Pro family of fake security software programs.

Such programs, also known as scareware, have been proving more popular with hi-tech criminals in recent months.

The Anti-Phishing Working Group estimated that there were 9,287 bogus anti-malware program in circulation in December 2008 - a rise of 225% since January 2008.

The US government has moved to shut down some companies peddling the programs that falsely claim to find malicious software on PCs and then charge for the non-existent threats to be removed.

In addition, the Internet Antivirus Pro software displays fake Windows security messages to try and trick people into thinking the product is legitimate. The software also contains a password stealer that watches where people go online and grabs login data.

News : Indian Companies Among Top Ten IT Infrastructure Outsourcers

Indian outsourcing companies figure among the top ten worldwide in IT infrastructure services, reflecting the growing appeal of offshore delivery of these services, according to outsourcing consultancy Technology Partners International (TPI).

Indian outsourcers figured in the top ten by value of contracts closed in the first half of this year, not only in their traditionally strong area of application development and maintenance (ADM), but also in infrastructure services, Siddharth Pai, a partner at TPI, said on Thursday.

That Indian companies such as HCL Technologies and Wipro have made it to the top ten in infrastructure services, a relatively new area in IT services for Indian outsourcers, suggests that customers are now considering seriously the option of remote delivery of these services from offshore locations like India.

The market for outsourcing has shrunk to US$40.2 billion in contracts in the first half of this year from $51.5 billion in the first half of last year. TPI monitors contracts of a value of $25 million and above.

It is unlikely that the outsourcing market this year will grow to last year's level of $93.1 billion, and is more likely to end this year with total contracts of less than $80 billion, Pai said.

Top Indian outsourcers have reported flat or declining revenue in the quarter ended June 30. Infosys, India's second largest outsourcer, has forecast that revenue for its fiscal year ending March 31, 2010 will decline by 3.1 to 4.6 percent over revenue in the previous year.

Apple Inc., the most popular source of music in the United States, stripped copy protection from all the songs in its iTunes music store and disclosed plans to charge as little as 69 cents a track. Under a variable pricing plan, songs will cost 69 cents, 99 cents, or $1.29 starting in April, with most albums going for $9.99, Apple marketing head Phil Schiller said yesterday at the Macworld conference in San Francisco. He spoke in place of chief executive Steve Jobs, who said Monday he’s undergoing treatment for a “hormone imbalance.” Apple had drawn criticism for using so-called digital rights management on most tracks, prompting Jobs two years ago to make a public plea to music labels to change their licensing terms.
The protections prevented customers from listening to music on unauthorized devices and limited the copies they could burn onto CDs. The company also faced competition from Amazon.com Inc., which charges as little as 79 cents a song - with no copy protection. While record labels liked having DRM, they also wanted variable prices, letting them charge more for popular songs, said Barry Jaruzelski, a partner at the consulting firm Booz & Co. in Florham Park, N.J. Until now, Apple sold most tracks for 99 cents each. Starting yesterday, about 8 million songs were being offered without copy-protection software as part of the iTunes Plus service, Apple said. By the end of March, the other 2 million songs in its catalog will be available without such software.

Microsoft releases Windows 7 and is available for download

The first public trial, or beta, version of Windows 7 has been released. Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer used his keynote speech at CES to announce that software developers would get at the trial version on 7 January. On 9 January members of the public will get the chance to download the successor to Windows for themselves. Mr Ballmer said Windows 7 would be the pivot of a broader Microsoft push to improve the way its separate software and service families work together. In delivering the opening keynote, Mr Ballmer has taken over from Bill Gates - who in 2008 bowed out of day-to-day involvement with the company he founded. In a nod to the chilly economic climate, Mr Ballmer said: “We face some really big challenges. We are all feeling it and its impact will likely be with us for some time.”
But, he said, the global economic slowdown would not hobble the pace of technological change. “I believe our digital lives will only continue to get richer,” said Mr Ballmer. “There’s no turning back from the connected world.” The newest version of the Windows operating system would, he said, be the “linchpin” of an effort to make it easier for customers to do more with the different Microsoft gadgets and services they use. Microsoft is expected to cap the number of copies of the beta version of Windows 7 available to the public. The minimum requirements for running Windows 7 are a PC with a 1 Ghz processor, 1GB of RAM, 16 GB of disk space, 128MB of video memory and support for DX9 graphics. Some of the Windows 7’s features help it work with other devices. A “home group” system makes it straightforward to enrol PCs, Xbox consoles, media servers and other gadgets into a local network that can share media and content.

Some notes about the accounts and the passwords

- The built-in Administrator account is found on the Welcome screen only if there are no other accounts available, other than Guest, or when the computer is booted into Safe Mode.
- To get Admin account on the “Welcome Screen” make sure that there are no accounts logged in.
- The built-in Administrator account can create and change passwords for all users, but cannot restore a forgotten one.
- When a password is changed, that account will lose all encrypted files, personal certificates and stored Internet Explorer passwords or network resources.
- Press “CTRL-ALT-DEL” twice to get the classic Windows logon box. Type: Administrator. If this account has a password, enter it. Otherwise, leave the it blank.
- Recovering a password is much more difficult. Using a cracking program can take weeks!
RESET A PASSWORD USING THE ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT

1. Boot into Safe Mode.
2. Log on using the built-in Administrator account.
3. Open: Control Panel -> User Accounts.
4. On the Users tab, select a user name, the password to change and click Reset Password.
RESET A PASSWORD AT THE LOGON SCREEN WITH THE COMMAND PROMPT

At the logon screen, press Shift+F10 to open a Command Prompt with adminisrative priviledges and type:

Microsoft on Tuesday took the wraps of the preview version of Windows 7, which will be the successor to Vista. Julie Larson Green, Microsoft’s vice president for Windows experience, hosted a demo in which she walked attendees through the features of the operating system.At first glance, Windows 7 maintains the streamlined look of Vista, but appears more muted — even Windows XP-like. Mostly, Microsoft seems to be focusing more on functionality, possibly in a bid to put some distance between Windows 7 and the criticisms which have dogged Vista.

Most obviously, a quick tour through Windows 7 reveals its new taskbar, which is sparser than in previous iterations of the OS. From the screen shots, it’s clear that Microsoft has listened to criticism and tuned many features, including search and access to security controls. The look and feel of the user interface is also highly customizable. The version of Windows 7 previewed at PDC is technically a pre-beta release. The official shipment of the final version is expected in about a year’s time.

$10M for world changing idea - only from Google!!

Google Inc., which is celebrating its 10th birthday this month, today unveiled a $10 million effort to implement ideas that can “change the world by helping as many people as possible.” As part of the Project 10^100 (pronounced Project 10 to the 100th), Google plans to ask its users to submit ideas until Oct. 20 for ways to improve people’s lives. Google will choose what it feels are the 100 best ideas and then allow its users to vote on which of them should be funded. The users will narrow the results to 20 finalists, and a panel of judges will choose up to five ideas that will receive funding, Google said.
Google noted that the ideas can be big or small, technology-driven or not. But they do have to have a potential positive impact on the world. The company cited an example of two people coming up with an idea to help millions of people carry water long distances by designing the Hippo Water Roller, a relatively inexpensive 24-gallon container that can be easily wheeled on the ground. The categories for the project include, but are not limited to, community, energy, environment, health, education, shelter and opportunities for people to better provide for themselves and their families. Start thinking!!!!

Google to bring back old newspapers

Google is redoubling efforts to offer a digital archive of the world’s newspapers. Two years ago, the search giant began indexing the existing digital archives of papers like The New York Times and The Washington Post, and today, with a post to The Official Google Blog, the company said it’s now working with other publishers to bring a much broader range of old newsprint into the project. “We’re launching an initiative to make more old newspapers accessible and searchable online by partnering with newspaper publishers to digitize millions of pages of news archives,” the post says. “Not only will you be able to search these newspapers, you’ll also be able to browse through them exactly as they were printed - photographs, headlines, articles, advertisements and all.”

Partners include the Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph, the oldest newspaper in North America at 244 years. They don’t include even older papers from across the pond. This newly digitized content is available through the Google News Archive, accessible via the main Google News site. “Stories we’ve scanned under this initiative will appear alongside already-digitized material from publications like the New York Times as well as from archive aggregators, and are marked ‘Google News Archive,’” the post continues. “Over time, as we scan more articles and our index grows, we’ll also start blending these archives into our main search results so that when you search Google.com, you’ll be searching the full text of these newspapers as well.”

Nevertheless, the spot is the first and most visible sign of an ambitious effort by Microsoft’s Windows business to reconnect with consumers around the globe.
The new campaign will highlight how Windows has become an indispensible part of the lives of a billion people around the globe -- not only on PCs but also now online and via mobile devices. It will illustrate how Windows integrates consumer experiences across PCs, online and on mobile phones through Windows Vista, Windows Live and Windows Mobile. Microsoft is working with retail partners and PC manufacturers to enhance the experience consumers have with Windows at every touch-point:

Comscore as well as Nielsen Netratings estimated Google’s U.S. search engine market at more than 60% in July. While the market research firms have come up with substantially different numbers for their July report, both agree that Google now runs more than three times the numbers of searches of its closest rival and more than twice the searches of Yahoo and Microsoft combined. Comscore and Nielsen Netratings posted market share numbers for Google at greater than 60% for the second time this year. However, while the April result could have been considered as a blip, the July result fits the pattern of Google chipping away market share from its rivals, bit by bit.
Nielsen Netratings estimates that Google was used for 60.2% or more than 4.8 billion of 8.0 billion searches started by U.S. users during the month of July. Comcast came up with a 61.9% share for Google and 7.3 billion searches of a total of a total of 11.8 billion. Both Yahoo and Microsoft keep losing ground: Nielsen puts the two companies at 17.4% and 11.9%, Comscore at 20.5% and 8.9%. Google’s market share gains appear to have accelerated in 2008, with much stronger growth than in previous years. According to Nielsen Netratings, Google had a market share of 46.2% in July 2005, 49.2% in July 2006 and 53.3% in July 2007. Over the past year, Google was able to increase its market share by almost seven percentage points – more than in any other 12-month period before.

EA unveils Godfather 2

Electronic Arts is once again hoping to profit from Mario Puzo’s mafioso drama with a sequel to their surprisingly competent Godfather game (pictured above), cleverly dubbed Godfather 2. The new entry in the series, scheduled for release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC platforms in February of 2009, sees the story expand to include criminal operations in Cuba, Florida and Godfather mainstay New York City.

Key to this new crime empire is the customized crew system. “Each family member specializes in a specific field such as demolitions, arson, engineering, first-aid and more. As The Don you control the family, sending some of your men on missions while heading off into action with others,” the official press release explains. Players will once again roam open-world environments as the newly appointed Don of New York. In keeping with the new position of leadership, players will handle strategic organizational aspects of the mob, like establishing and maintaining criminal endeavors and creating a stable of Made Men.

Intel's graphic chip line - Intel Larrabee

Intel has unveiled details of the chip that will spearhead its move into computer graphics. It has revealed blueprints for the Larrabee chip that is scheduled to first appear in finished products in late 2009 or early 2010. Larrabee will be a stand-alone graphics processor unlike the onboard chips it produces for many PC makers. The move will bring Intel into direct competition with graphics specialists Nvidia and the ATI division of AMD. Intel is aiming to put Larrabee into graphics cards for PCs that help show games and video in very high detail. Like existing graphics chips from Nvidia and ATI, Larrabee is expected to have many separate processing cores onboard.

So far Intel has not said how many processing cores Larrabee will have onboard at launch or in subsequent generations. Future Nvidia and ATI graphics chips are expected to be made up of several hundred cores. While Intel will initially target the PC graphics card market, it expects the raw computer power in the chip to help with oil and gas exploration, medical imaging and financial services in the future. Many scientists and researchers already use coupled graphics cards as a desktop supercomputer that helps them carry out simulations far faster and cheaper than on a larger dedicated machine. Intel said it would release more details about Larrabee at the upcoming Siggraph computer graphics conference due to be held in Los Angeles from 12-15 August.

Toyota introduced Winglet, Segway competition

Toyota Motor on Friday showed off a new stand-up scooter that could one day be seen zipping alongside the Segway on the personal-transporter superhighway. The “Winglet” has a body the size of an A3 sheet of paper that houses an electric motor, two wheels, and internal sensors that constantly monitor the rider’s position and make adjustments in power to ensure stability. A parallel link mechanism lets riders go forward, backward, and turn by shifting body weight, making the Winglet potentially useful for maneuvering in tight spaces or crowded urban environments. Riders can cruise around at a leisurely 3.7 mph–not ideal for rushing to a meeting, but nice for scooting around a shopping mall, perhaps. (The Segway, by comparison, can hit 12.5 mph.)

The Winglet comes in small, medium, and large sizes ranging in height from 18 inches to 3 feet 8 inches, with handlebars that also rise to different levels. All three models are about 18 inches wide and 10 inches long. The smallest version weighs 22 pounds, and can be folded and tossed into a (big) bag for optimal shoulder dislocation. All versions of the device take an hour to charge. No word yet on when we might see commuters atop the contraptions. The company will start testing the vehicle this fall at a Japanese airport and a seaside resort. More testing is planned for 2009 at shopping complexes and other bustling locales.

LG introduces Blu-Ray player with Netflix support

On Thursday, LG Electronics launched the LG BD300 Network Blu-ray Disc player, a DVD player that will play both Blu-ray and standard definition discs. As a bonus, the player will also allow consumers to instantly stream any of the 12,000 movies and TV episodes available to Netflix subscribers. With a wired broadband connection, Netflix members can access their account information and “Queue” via the BD300. Once there, customers can browse movie selections, read synopses, and rate movies. They will also be able to pause, fast forward, and rewind their film choices with the BD300’s remote control.

The player also features LG’s BD Live functionality that provides bonus content, real-time extras, and special picture-in-picture access for selected Blu-ray discs. This is not Netflix’s first foray into the set-top box arena; their streaming capabilities can be found in the Netflix Player by Roku, a product that offers Netflix account access and content streaming without a PC but is not a disc player. 1. Open Firefox 3.

2. In the Location Bar, input about:config.

3. Click to get past the warning message that appears.

4. Right-click anywhere on the preference list.

5. Click New and select Boolean.

6. When prompted to input a New boolean value, input the following:

config.trim_on_minimize

7. Select true for the value.

It is known news that Rahman has been roped in to compose the tunes for the ambitious venture of Shankar ‘Robot‘ which stars superstar Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai in the lead. Reports say that Rahman is said to have charged a whopping Ten Crores for churning out the tunes for this project.
Given the nature of Shankar and the magnanimity of the movie, it looks like every penny is worth spending on Rahman and the musical maestro has already got on to the job of composing and creation which means that his mammoth remuneration has been accepted. It now remains to be seen how far will Rahman justify his fee for this heavy duty film.

Google launches Lively a virtual world

A really bad news for Second Life: Google is launching a new service today called Lively, a browser based virtual world add-on that lets users create and customize avatars and worlds, interact with other users, and generally have a richer social interaction than is offered by GTalk today. Worlds can be embedded into web pages, although only Windows users on IE or Firefox can view them, after an add-on download and installation. Mac and Linux users will have to wait for now.

Google has created a number of sample rooms that can be copied and altered, or users can start from scratch and build their own world. Furniture and other items can be added and moved around. Avatars can talk to each other, do things like dance and shake hands, and manipulate objects (in a demo, my avatar was able to blow up drums of toxic waste by double clicking on them. Users can also, of course, chat with each other - GTalk is the underlying chat engine. This isn’t yet a full Second Life competitor. There’s no single world, for example, where users can move around. But it’s easy to see Google evolving this into a single online world. And then, of course, selling advertising into it.

Microsoft buys “human” search engine Powerset

Microsoft has agreed to buy Silicon Valley semantic search engine Powerset, say reports. According to Venture Beat, the deal could happen as early as next month with a price tag in the $100 million range - more than double the estimated value of the company. The Powerset search engine first debuted in May. It strives to be different than say Google and Yahoo by giving you more meaningful and smarter search results than other search engines. Using simple phrases, short questions, and of course keywords, Powerset is supposed to understand what you are looking for and help you quickly find the information you need. We reviewed the beta version of the search engine in May and we were not impressed.
Ever since Microsoft’s failed bid for Yahoo, the company has been searching for another way to compete with Google. Powerset’s natural language or semantic based technology would seem to fit in with Microsoft’s current strategy as we reported last month. Natural language search is one of several new concepts for the next evolution of search engine technology. As we discussed in May, Powerset is designed to “understand what you are looking for and help you quickly find the information you need” using short phrases, questions and keywords instead of the traditional Google method that takes keywords and ranks Internet links based on a website’s popularity.

The End of Windows XP on Monday, June 30 !

After delays, delays, and rumors of more delays, the era of Windows XP has finally reached its final hours. Microsoft has made it official: Monday, June 30 will be the last day Microsoft sells XP to the masses. In fact, some companies have already stopped offering XP as an option on new machines as they prep for the switchover.

Earlier rumors that Microsoft might extend the sales date have proven untrue, as Microsoft has reiterated that, indeed, June 30 will be the final sales date cut-off for the product. That's it. It's a Vista world now.

Loopholes will remain for some PC makers for some months to come, namely those who are building ultra-low-cost computers that aren't powerful enough for Vista. (Though some machines in this class, like HP's Mini-Note, actually come with Vista anyway.) For at least the rest of the year, downgrades remain an option for many PC purchasers too, though you'll have to jump through some hoops, and possibly pay extra, in order to get XP.

As I've written several times (and reassured many of you in email responses), XP fans needn't panic about the loss of XP. Even if you don't have a copy on hand, the product will be available through many channels for years to come (and likely forever), through both retail outlets and the aftermarket. As I type this, nearly 1,000 copies of XP are on sale on eBay, where they usually sell for less than $100.

In other news, Microsoft has recently pledged to keep supporting XP, including the release of security updates, all the way through 2014. So XP users needn't fret that you'll suddenly be victimized by hackers due to unpatched security flaws. Updates should work exactly as you're used to them currently through the Windows Update system.

Blizzard announced this new title at their World Wide Invitational in Paris. There is little info about the game so far apart from the game footage and screens, but below is an informative article. Okay, that looks like fun. The exploding worm dude is nasty.
”Diablo III is first and foremost a co-operative game,” that’s the message from Blizzard. They’re not expecting you to play this on your own, so we’re looking at plenty of online options for slashing our way through those dungeons. The campaign is said to be of a similar length to that of Diablo II, with NPCs and story events taking place within the game world. The campaign will apparently feature a mixture of both randomly generated and hand-made static dungeons.
Diablo III is going to be delivered in a brand new, “real-physics” 3D engine developed by Blizzard. The game is so far confirmed for PC and Mac, and Blizzard have “no plans” at present to become console developers. It’s going to be supported by the revised version of Battlenet, which will go live with Starcraft II later this year.

PvP features are “planned” but there’s no information on them so far, and the same goes for trading items.
Barbarian and Witchdoctor classes have been seen so far, so that’s fighter and summoner-wizard-shaman-type fantasy archetypes covered.

The release date is “when it’s done”, but it’s traditional for announcement-to-release to be just under a year for Blizzard games, so we’re looking at having it in time for Christmas 2009. The title has already been in development for four years, so that’s looking like a fairly realistic guess.

XP: kill a Windows process from the command line with taskkill

The ability to perform tasks from a system's command line allows those tasks to be used in batch files.This post describes several uses of taskkill to terminate Windows processes.

If you know the name of a process to kill, for example notepad.exe, use the following command from a command prompt to end it:

taskkill /IM notepad.exe

This will cause the program to terminate by asking for confirmation if there are unsaved changes.
To forcefully kill the same process, add the /F option to the command line. Be careful with the /F option as it will terminate all matching processes without confirmation.

To kill a single instance of a process, specify its process id (PID). For example, if the desired process has a PID of 827, use the following command to kill it:

Using filters, a variety of different patterns can be used to specify the processes to kill. For example, the following filter syntax will forcefully kill all processes owned by the user Quinn:

Although it drives many people crazy, I love downloading software to my desktop. I think it's the most convenient place. Other people like a specialized folder/directory for downloads. Either way, here is how to set the download location in firefox 3.

1. On windows XP or Vista boxes, you will need to select the Options selection from the Tools menu. On OS X boxes, select the Preferences menu from the Firefox menu. The rest of the steps are the same.

2. In the window that appears, select the Main tab.

3. In the Downloads section, browse and select your desired location in the Save files to textbox. You can also decide if you want firefox to prompt you for the download location for each download by selecting the Always ask me where to save files option.

World's top 500 super computers

The latest TOP500 list – a collection of the fastest supercomputers in the world – has been released by its creators, and there’s some big wins for certain manufacturers. The list, published this week on the TOP500 site, gives the number one spot to IBM’s Roadrunner , system installed at the US Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory and hitting a staggering 1.026 petaflops/s – the first supercomputer to break the petaflop milestone.At the same time, Roadrunner is also one of the most energy efficient systems on the Top500.According to IBM, the key to this remarkable achievement was the use of Cell Broadband Engine processors – the same chips that are used in Sony’s PlayStation 3 console.

In fact, this 31st incarnation of the list has been extremely kind to Big Blue – IBM systems account for almost half the systems listed. Intel has been doing well, too: 75 percent of the systems present in the list use one or another of their processors, and systems based around quad-core processors use Intel almost exclusively. Intel’s growth has come at a cost to its main competitor, however: AMD sees its share of the list drop from 15.8 percent back in November last year to just 11 percent in this latest compilation. With Intel storming the charts, and IBM’s radical Cell Broadband Engine proving its mettle, it’s clear that AMD is going to have to pull something pretty special out of the R&D hat if it doesn’t want to concede the high-performance computing market.

Dasavatharam movie review

Before going into anything else, let me first answer the question that must be running through everyone's mind. Is the movie worth all the hype and hoopla surrounding it? Is it a must watch movie? The answer to both is a very resounding YES!!!

Having said that, i must also make it clear that the movie has its flaws, and it even fails at something that is always expected in a Kamal movie- the actor's versatile acting. Though there are moments in the movie where Kamal shows why he can be called the most versatle actor India has ever produced, and there is clearly no doubt that Kamal is indeed a very versatile actor, but the extensive make-up for few roles just make it impossible for Kamal to emote and his acting poweress is seen only in the body language of the actor in these roles.

And talking about the make-up, so much was talked about it that one really believed that Kamal would not be identified in few of the roles, but the roles clearly stand out because of their pathetic make-up and as previously said, he make up also weighs down the actor from showing his acting skills. Especially the roles of Kalifullah Khan and Christian Fletcher. They look so odd with the make-up, they seem almost in-human.

The movie also has a weak storyline, but the 10 characters are beautifully brought together to form the jig-saw puzzle that is Dasavatharam.

The story begins with the Scientist Kamal(Govind Ramasamy) recounting his adventures at a ceremony to commemorate his services to the world. The story, as said by Govind, then shifts to 12th century Tamil Nadu where we witness Rangaraja Nambi being drowned along with the Vishnu Idol by a Shivaite king. Nambi's wife(Asin) also kills herself after witnessing her husband's death.

We then come to modern day(well, Dec 2004) to witness the creation of a biological viral weapon capable killing villains. Govind, in his venture to prevent the vial containing the virus from falling into the wrong hands finds himself being chased by the villain Christian Fletcher(Kamal). Fletcher is portrayed in true Hollywood and is shown as a very cruel person indeed. But as previously said, the facial makeup should have been better. Govind finds himself in a chase to get the vial, which journeys to India with Fletcher hot on its trails. Mallika sherawat comes in as translator for Fletcher and has the desried effect and delivers with her short role.

Enter Balram Naidu, the comic relief of the movie. The character is absoluely hillarious and Kamal is clearly at his best portraying Naidu. The CID officer is brought in to the Govind case and Kamal delivers a punch with his dialogues, expressions and body languages for this role. Asin comes in as an innocent girl, inevitably brought into the chase as the vial lands up in her household. Though the movie has Kamal written all over it, Asin has palyed her role to perfections and makes us sit up and take notice

The other characters in the story add the necessary spice to the movie from Avataar Singh to Vincent Poovaragan. Rest of the story is about how Govind prevents the vial from being obtained by Fletcher and how the 12th century "couple" are united again while fighting for a similar cause that separated them 8 centuries ago. The final tsunami scene must be mentioned. It is awe inspiring and is shot very well.

The USP of the movie are Kamal, Kamal, the technical brilliance and Kamal again. Kamal fans would just love to see their actor take so many roles and even the critics of Kamal would clearly give their thumds up for Kamal and his das avataras

All in all a very good movie, giving various messages for people in the modern world, talking about spiritualism and religion to biological warfare. A must watch indeed!!!

Sergey Brin pays $5m to reserve seat in Space Flight

The company that sends wealthy tourists into space announced plans Wednesday for a private flight in 2011 to the international space station on a Russian-built Soyuz rocket and said Google co-founder Sergey Brin has paid $5 million to reserve a seat on a future flight.

Space Adventures said no decision has been made yet about when Brin, a 35-year-old billionaire and native of Moscow, will fly or where he might go.

So far, the company has sent five tourists to the space station, but it has also been dreaming about other destinations, including a swing around the far side of the moon.

Brin didn't appear at the company's news conference at the Explorer's Club in Manhattan, but he said in a statement that he considered his $5 million deposit an investment in the company, as well as an option to participate in a future space flight.

"I am a big believer in the exploration and commercial development of the space frontier, and am looking forward to the possibility of going into space," the statement said.

On each of its five previous missions, the Virginia-based company has essentially been tagging along aboard flights already scheduled by the Russians.

The sixth customer, computer game designer Richard Garriott, is scheduled to go up in October after paying $35 million for his seat. He is a vice chairman of Space Adventures and the son of NASA astronaut Owen Garriott, who sits on the company's advisory board.

For the 2011 mission, however, Space Adventures would charter an entire Soyuz space flight, with space for two clients plus a Russian cosmonaut. Russia's Federal Space Agency would still run the mission, but Space Adventures would pay for the trip and buy its own Soyuz spacecraft.
"The Soyuz to be used for this mission shall be a specially manufactured craft, separate from the other Soyuz vehicles designated for the transportation of the (space station) crews," Alexey B. Krasnov, who heads Russia's manned space program, said in a statement released by the company.

Space Adventures has been planning for a trip in which one of its craft would circle — but not land on — the moon. Diamandis said he expects to have a customer take the first such flight within five years.

It has been advertising tickets on that flight at $100 million per seat.

Stop virus permanently- Video tutorial !!

We all faced it , yeah right whenever we put in our friend's pen/thumb drive or sometimes our own pen drive which went away on a round into our pc pop comes the antivirus saying it just stopped a virus , but sometimes its too late , yeah the virus is fast!!!
OR what if you don't have anti-virus s/w at all!!!!

then suddenly you find that hey where did all my settings go and inspite of you being the administrator of your own pc, you are not allowed access to some areas such as the taskmanager, folder options etc etc !!!!

so here's a permanent solution to this entry of viruses from an external drive ...

You could wonder how the viruses run automatically even if u didn't double-click them!!!
That's because they are the default program to be run in the autoplay list , yeah so now you got it, yeah just turn off the Autoplay option in Windows once and for all! ( Now for this to do, you should be the administrator , otherwise hmmm...)

Steps :

1) Goto Run ( Click start and then click run )
2) Type gpedit.msc hit Enter
3) Expand User Configuration option located at your left
4) Click on System
5) Find an option at your right which says TURN OFF AUTOPLAY .Double click it.
6) Enable it and Turn Off Auto Display to All Drives
!!** If group edit has already been disabled it means you don't have permission to modify it as you are not the administrator or you have already been affected with a virus .**!! ( sorry for that )

Adobe launches new version of Acrobat.com

Adobe Systems Inc. is launching a new version of its document sharing software Acrobat on Monday, and this time it can package videos. Acrobat allows users to package documents so they can be read across different hardware and operating systems. Acrobat 9 comes with Adobe’s video-enabling software Flash. Users can include Flash-based videos when they create and share documents with the portable document format, commonly known as PDF. With a professional version of Acrobat 9, for example, users could package a Power Point presentation not just with images, but also with an audio of the presenter’s voice.

AMD to go 12 core server processors

Advanced Micro Devices plans to release processors with 12 cores, which changes its product road map and kills earlier plans to release 8-core chips. The 12-core processor, code-named Magny-Cours, will be targeted at servers and is due for release in the first half of 2010, according to the company’s updated road map announced Wednesday. The chip will include 12M bytes of L3 cache and support DDR3 RAM, according to the road map. AMD is jumping from a 6-core chip code-named Istanbul, due for release in the second half of 2009, straight to a 12-core chip the following year, an AMD spokesman said. Until last month, AMD officials repeated plans to ship the 8-core server chip, code-named Barcelona, in 2009.
Montreal has now been replaced by Istanbul, followed by a 12-core product in 2010, the spokesman said. AMD is also planning to release a 6-core chip code-named Sao Paulo in 2010. The chip will include 6M bytes of L3 cache and support for DDR3 RAM. Sao Paulo chips could meet the need of systems that don’t require 12 cores, Allen said. The new chips will be more power efficient as they will be manufactured using the 45-nanometer process, an upgrade from the 65-nm process currently used to manufacture Barcelona. Even with AMD’s altered road map, Intel will remain formidable. Intel shipped 78.5 percent of chips in the first quarter of 2008, while AMD held a 20.6 percent market share, a slight gain from the 18.7 percent market share it held in the first quarter of 2007.

TRACEROUTE

There were some undersea cables cut some days back and reports claimed places like Dubai and some other middle east were out of internet service .

So how to tell if the country u looking for is still online or not ?

It’s very simple . Run a Traceroute.

This simple network utility traces the hops internet packets take as they work their way across the internet towards your destination. It also measures how much time the journey from point A to point B takes, both in total and for each hop between nodes.

If your packets reach their intended destination then you'll know tat ur destination is up .

Right .. Let’s see how that works now …

Step 1: Find a Test Server

To do a proper traceroute, you need to pick a server that's actually in the destination country.However, there's no guarantee that any particular site is hosted by a server in the country its domain name indicates. Corporations especially tend to have servers spread out over several countries. Official government sites are almost always a sure thing that s hosted inside the country.

Step 2: Trace It!

1. Click on the Start button and choose Run.

2. In the text box, type cmd. This will bring up a command line prompt.

3. Type tracert hostname, where "hostname" is the web address of the server you want to test.

You can also use an IP address by typing tracert x.x.x.x, where the "x.x.x.x" is replaced by the IP address of the server.

4. Now u can watch the packets fly across the nodes .

Step 3: Analyze the Result

As your packets travel from point A to point B, you'll see each hop appear on its own line. Traceroute should display the address and name of each server or router along the way and the amount of time (measured in milliseconds) the packets take to travel between your desktop and that particular node. Eventually, you'll see your packets reach their destination. Here's an example of some raw traceroute data:

All Right ! ! U ve got the result . It may look like somethinhg above which I got while trying .

But how to interpret the results …

The times displayed are 3 pings from your desktop directly to that node, not the time its taking between the previous node and the current one

Asterisks (* * *) indicate a timeout. If you see a line with just asterisks on it, that means that the hop between nodes took longer than 200ms. Several lines of timeouts mean the packets are being held up in infinite loops or lost somewhere along the way.

Note some points on the traceroute will show a timeout because administrators have restricted pings, and this may not necessarily indicate a fail point.

Ur ping test is successful if u get a ping reply packet from the destination u wanted to test.

Encrypt to Your BitTorrent Transfers:

The encryption used by many popular BitTorrent clients today s RC4 encryption . It will obfuscate not only the header but the entire stream, which makes it considerably more difficult to detect that you're using BitTorrent.

Azureus - To turn on encryption, head to the Tools menu. Select Options, then Connection, then Transport Encryption. Check the "Require encrypted transport" box and select RC4 in the "Minimum encryption" drop-down menu.

µTorrent - Open up the Preferences panel and select the BitTorrent tab. Select Protocol encryption and then choose between "enabled" and "forced."

"Enabled" option to allow unencrypted connections when no encrypted clients exist. It will give you more connections, but it won't be as effective at defeating traffic shapers.

BitComet -Head to the Options menu and choose Preferences. Then go to Advanced > Connection and select "Protocol encryption." There are options for "auto detect" and "always."

Change the Way the BitTorrent Protocol Behaves:

The BitTorrent protocol has a distinct handshake. To control uploading by seeders, ISPs have learned to look for this handshake. The recent releases of both µTorrent and Azureus include a "Lazy Bitfield" feature to hide seeders from ISPs.

When Lazy Bitfield is enabled, the handshake is changed to make a BitTorrent seeder initially appear to be a non-seeding peer (sometimes called a leecher). This is done by sending a bitfield indicating missing pieces. Then, once the handshake is done, the client notifies its peer that it now has the pieces that were originally indicated as missing.

Azureus - To turn on encryption, head to the Tools menu. Select Options, then Transfer. Enable Lazy-Bitfield here.

µTorrent Lazy Bitfield is controlled in the Advanced section Preferences: peer.lazy_bitfield.

Change Your BitTorrent Port Number:

The default port for BitTorrent transfers is port 6881, with some clients using different ports within the range of 6881-6999. As a result of ISP interference, all clients allow you to change the port number (or port range, sometimes) used for BitTorrent transfers. The setting is in the Options or Preferences for your client .

But remember ,Whenever you change your port, you need to adjust your router to allow incoming connections. The process of locating the current port being used and then configuring your router to match. This is Port Forwarding . (I ll brief up about port forwarding if u need to know anything about it) .

Since the beginning of the format war, Blu-ray has been consistently outperforming HD DVD, but never at such a large rate. The second-place format was dealt a big blow a couple weeks ago when Warner Bros announced it was dropping HD DVD support, preventing the format from gaining any momentum during the Consumer Electronics Show.
Additionally, Home Media Magazine reports that the 10 top-selling HD titles last week were all Blu-ray Discs, the first time that not one HD DVD made the list. At the top of the list was Blu-ray’s 3:10 To Yuma, which sold 10 times as many discs as the HD DVD release of The Kingdom. It's priced starting at $1,799 and will be available within two weeks.
Sporting a silvery finish, the MacBook Air features a 13.3-inch LED-backlit widescreen display that has a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution.

It weighs about 3 pounds(less than 1.5 kg), and sports a thickness of 0.16-0.76 inches. It's 12.8 inches wide and 8.95 inches deep.

The MacBook Air also features a built-in iSight webcam and a full sized MacBook-style black keyboard. The MacBook Air features a 1.8-inch hard disk drive with 80GB of storage capacity standard. A 64GB solid-state disk (SSD) drive is an option. The hard drive is a Parallel ATA (PATA) model that operates at 4200 RPM.

The laptop is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo chip running at 1.6GHz, with 1.8GHz available as an option. Jobs noted that Intel was willing to engineer a new version of the Core 2 Duo specifically to Apple's specifications -- it's 60 percent smaller than others. The chip operates with 4MB of on-chip shared L2 cache running at full processor speed, and uses an 800MHz frontside bus. 2GB of 667MH DDR2 SDRAM is also included.

The MacBook Air also includes 802.11n-based wireless networking support and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR.

Apple estimates that with wireless networking turned on, the MacBook Air can get about 5 hours of battery life.

The company had recently projected that falling Blu-ray set-top pricing was hurting what advantages the HD DVD format enjoyed, leading Blu-ray to be in a strong position to be victorious eventually. But the Warner bombshell moved up that timetable considerably, according to the company.
“As we stand today, Warner Bros.’ decision to shift from its dual-format position has brought much-needed clarity to the market and strengthens Blu-ray’s hand considerably,” said Jim Bottoms, co-managing director of Understanding & Solutions. “Looking ahead, the next six months will be critical for the future of high-definition discs. There’s significant market potential for a packaged format, and with 75% of Hollywood studio disc releases exclusively behind Blu-ray from the end of May 2008, the confusion may soon be over. We should see an end to the format war within the year.”
The company predicts that by 2011, high-def set-top penetration in the U.S should be at 36%.

What's the difference between putting your PC in Hibernate or Standby mode? Yeah, we weren't sure either. Luckily the Productivity Portfolio weblog schools us on the finer details of Windows XP power schemes.

Using Standby:

Your machine recovers quickly as your data is stored in RAM. The slower part is waking up the peripherals. Although your machine is in "standby" the power has been cut to items such as your hard drive and monitor. You're running your machine in a very low power mode, but it is still on. This mode can be useful if you're on a notebook and need to conserve your battery while you step away.

With Hibernate:

The big difference is that your PC has shut down and is not pulling power. Another difference is that your data is saved to your hard disk and not RAM. This makes it a safer, but slower option for shut down and resume.
Not all PCs have the capability and are configured to Hibernate. If yours is, to see the Hibernate option on your XP shutdown screen, hold down the Shift key when you shut down

If you are worried that some programs on your PC are secretly making connections to websites in the background, here's a quick tip that uses a simple DOS command to detect and prevent such suspicious activity:

1. Type cmd in your Windows Run box.

2. Type "netstat -b 5 > activity.txt" and press enter. After say 2 minutes, press Ctrl+C.

3. Type "activity.txt" on the command line to open the log file

The file activity.txt will have a log of all process that made a connection to the Internet in the last two minutes. It will also show which process connected to which website in this time. And not just the web browsers (like iexplore.exe or opera.exe), the log will also show your IM clients, download managers, email programs or any software that requires a net connection.

Scroll though the activity.txt file and look for any process names or website addresses that you are not aware of. If you track one , go to the task manager (or Process Explorer) to find the location of the executable on your computer and eliminate it.

Dec-14-the D-day in tamil cinema industry,yep it’s the release of the much awaited movie
‘BILLA 2007’ starring ultimate star ajith kumar,glamour gal nayanthara and namitha ;) .
Thanks to Manoj prabhakar(spike@WTF) we managed to get second show tickets at satyam…The entrance of the theatre was thronging with people from all bases…after all ajith is known as the KING OF OPENING!, so no surprises….we somehow managed to squeeze ourselves in and waited at the edge of our seats anticipating the start!...The movie did start on schedule and the screams and whistles announced the arrival of thala-billa on silver screen!!.

Ajith looks super cool sporting striking costumes and coolers.The crowd goes wild for every move and his stylish ramp walk(with theme as BGM).But u tend to lose temper after finding out that all he does is walking,shooting and no talking!,Yep there aren’t many punch dialogues except one in which velu(billas dupe) mentions bout ‘THALA’.Velu,billas dupe.is a simpleton and tries his hand at comedy with santhanam.but to no success.We felt santhanam has been wasted and he appears oly in 2 scenes!!.

Vishnu Vardhan hasn’t much deviated from his blue-print-the original billa but the packaging and richness is appealing.Though some characters from original billa are missing and few new ones are added!. Billa is the first designer-look Kollywood film with classy action cuts. It's a technically chic, racy, engrossing entertainer with a Hollywood look. Vishnu and Ajit are targeting only the multiplex audiences and they are quite honest about it. Yuvan’s title track and theme music is one of the highlights of the film, though the songs fall flat! The re-mix title song My name is Billa… is no patch on the original and lacks its fervor, while the other re-mix number Vethalaiya Pottendi… has a good beat that makes you dance and is well shot The only mass number is Seval Kodi.., with Vijay Yesudas’s striking voice.But the dance sequence for it disappoints!.

The gorgeous Nayan as Sasha is a show stopper and no Tamil heroine has looked so glamorous on screen in recent times, thanks to her right attitude and stylist Anu Vardhan. Nayanthara has decided to go full throttle to look her sexiest best in sizzling hot micro-mini shorts!!!!, leather jacket, tall boots! and full ammunition!.On the contrary namitha with her excess fat and mini skirts scares us at times…there isn’t much scope for here in the movie,just a dance sequence few dialogue and bang she dies!!

BILLA 2K7 is old billas script in SRK DON’s suit.

Editor's note:I met with cricketer DINESH KARTHICK today morning in a temple and got a chance to chat for 20 odd minutes.The temple was sans crowd!!(obviously!).His opinion on the movie ‘was not bad.but it resembles DON more’.

Bottom-line:Treat for hard-core thala fans.Can be enjoyed once at a multiplex.

Multi-media device manufacturer Creative recently announced the addition of the 32 GB variant to the Zen range of media players. It's a move that will put Creative as the first mainstream manufacturers to incorporate 32 GB of flash storage in a PMP,, thus leaving behind competitor products from Apple which max-out at 16 GB.

The Creative Zen 32 GB is said to have a compact size, high battery life, and an SDHC card slot in order to increase the memory when required.
